HF RECEIVERS : If I would have only kept some of the ancient HF / Shortwave Receivers I have had in the past.
When I was a kid i would ride my bicycle to the various Goodwill and Salvation Army Thrift Stores hunting for HF Receivers. As I have stated on other pages within this site, this is how I obtained my first rig with a BFO. This opened my ears to 80 Meter Amateur Radio. Been listening to Old Men argue on the radio ever since.
Lately I have been in the market for an HF Receiver of sorts. it does not have to be a Vintage Rig, but, it has to have SSB Sideband Capability. I miss the old analog sets. If I ever find such a radio, likely I will put it online so everyone can enjoy listening to it. Likely this would be used for Short wave Radio Reception as livecbradio.com already has a live hf ham radio receiver online.
"HF" Trivia : Get this, I was doing the spell check on this page. The spell checker asked me if I wanted to change HF to VHF or UHF. Funny how it recognizes those two segments but not "HF".
Thinking about getting in the Short wave Radio Listening hobby? It's nothing compared to the way it was in the 70's and 80's, but, there is still plenty of action. The Radio Pirates are still there.
You have not lived until you have tuned up and down the HF band on a major Holiday. For example, on Christmas eve every year dozens of unlicensed individuals jam up the HF Ham Radio Bands. My guess is these people do this on Christmas thinking the FCC is off duty and home with their families.
Yes the Radio Communicator Pirates are still on HF. Not to be confused with MARS and Marine Nets. Once in a while you will be tuning around and hear people talking similar to Ham Operators. Their radio nets are very quick. All members will check in to the net, say a few words and then the whole thing closes down as quick as it started. Nobody gives a location, but, they all know who each other are via secret call book. It is only by chance you find activity like this. This is what HF / Short wave Receiver Tuning is all about.
Don't forget, the "11 Year Sunspot Cycle" that often determines how far radio signals travel is once again on the rise. HF Radio will soon be a mad house of activity 24 hours a day. You might be surprised what you hear tuning that dial.
